Niessen & de Vries
Richard Niessen (1972) and Esther de Vries (1974) form together an Amsterdam-based graphic design studio. They work for a wide range of clients in the cultural sector such as museums, artists and publishers. They also initiate exhibitions, books, lectures and workshops.

Richard Niessen graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1996. From 1999 to 2002 he was part of the Golden Masters design team, together with graphic designer Harmen Liemburg. Inspired by Ettore Sottsass (founder of the Memphis group) and the Scottish-Italian sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi, artists that similarly seek out the tension between structure and going overboard, Niessen developed his own systematic approach to design. His work is systematic, grid-like, readable and usable, as much as it is rich in form, shape and colour. Niessen gives projects a distinct language, a secret vocabulary that makes each piece stand out. He has worked for among many others the Stedelijk Museum, artist Jennifer Tee, his own band the Howtoplays and Atelier Rijksbouwmeester.
